Kolukkumalai, located at an altitude of 7,900 feet above sea level, is the world's highest tea plantation. Located just 35 km from Munnar town, it is accessible only by jeep — which is part of the thrill!

What to expect: The jeep ride begins at 4:30 AM from Camp Lake Point. The bumpy off-road journey through misty mountain trails takes about 45 minutes. As you reach the top, the horizon begins to glow orange and gold — and when the sun finally rises over the ancient rock peaks, it is truly one of the most spectacular sights in all of India.

What to wear: Carry a light jacket or hoodie — temperatures at the top can drop to 8–10°C before sunrise. Wear sturdy shoes as the terrain is uneven.

Pro tip: Bring your camera and arrive at least 20 minutes before sunrise to find the best spot. The golden hour lasts only about 15 minutes — make every second count!

Clothing: Suryanelli is significantly colder than Munnar town due to its high altitude. Nights drop to 4°C–8°C in peak season (Dec–Jan) and Kolukkumalai at 4 AM can be as cold as 2°C–4°C. You absolutely need heavy woolens, thermals (base layer), a thick down jacket or heavy fleece, warm gloves, a woolly hat and thick socks. Do not underestimate the cold — many visitors are caught off guard!

Essentials: Personal toiletries, sunscreen, insect repellent, a torch/flashlight with extra batteries, a power bank for your phone, and any personal medications.

For photography lovers: Bring your DSLR or mirrorless camera with a wide-angle lens for landscape shots. A tripod is essential for the pre-dawn Kolukkumalai safari. Extra memory cards and batteries are a must — there are no shops nearby!

What NOT to bring: Heavy luggage (you won't need it), valuable jewellery, or anything you can't afford to lose on a bumpy jeep ride.

October – February (Peak Season ⭐): The best time to visit. Suryanelli is significantly colder than Munnar town — nights drop to 4°C–8°C and Kolukkumalai at sunrise can be as cold as 2°C–4°C. Pack heavy woolens, thermals and a thick down jacket — this is not the place for a light cardigan! The skies are crystal clear and the sunrises are absolutely magical. December and January are especially popular — book early!

March – May (Summer): Temperatures rise slightly (20–28°C) but it's still very pleasant compared to the plains. Fewer crowds mean more peaceful treks and better availability. Great for college and school groups.

June – September (Monsoon): Munnar transforms into a lush green paradise during the monsoon. The waterfalls are at their most spectacular. However, jeep safaris to Kolukkumalai may be restricted due to muddy terrain. We recommend checking availability before booking during this period.

Our recommendation: December to February for the best overall experience — perfect weather, clear skies and the most spectacular sunrises of the year. Weekdays are quieter and slightly cheaper than weekends.
